Breath Matters is run by Rebecca Goulbourne, who is a certified Buteyko Method instructor and an Oxygen Advantage trained facilitator.
Rebecca is also a specialist teacher. (See: https://brightsparkscoaching.net/) Over her years of teaching, and particularly in her work with learners with special educational needs, Rebecca observed how many children breathed through their mouth rather than through their nose, held their breath when working, grunted as they struggled to maintain focus or generally benefited from simple breathwork techniques being incorporated in the school day.
Back in the 1990s, Rebecca discovered breathwork when she began having panic attacks having started work in The City of London. At the time, breathwork was rarely spoken about. Rebecca was coached by a Cambridge-based physiotherapist who, in turn, worked with Dr Claude Lum - a respiratory consultant at Papworth Hospital, Cambridge, who was known for his pioneering studies on hyperventilation. This physiotherapist introduced Rebecca to breathing techniques and to Dinah Bradley's early book on breathwork. Rebecca has practised breathwork since.
As her personal and professional interests began to merge, Rebecca began taking courses on breathwork and has since become to understand how science-backed breathing techniques can positively affect our bodies' biochemistry, biomechanics and psychophysiological behaviour.
Rebecca has a particular interest in working with children with specific learning difficulties, autistic spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder to help them to independently implement breathwork techniques that support self-regulation. She works with young people to coach them on how breathwork can be an easily accessible, free tool under their own control to help with anxiety. Rebecca is also passionate about the benefits of breathwork for women who are perimenopausal or post menopause. She has worked with children and young people with respiratory issues such as asthma and chronic rhinitis to coach them on how to improve their functional breathing patterns.
